Obituary for Paul Christian Bengs, Sr

Paul Christian Bengs was born on April 12, 1942 in Glendale, California, to Margaret and Donald Bengs. He was raised in the scenic Owens Valley, near Bishop, CA, where his father worked for the Department of Water and Power.

In his teen years, Paul and his parents moved to Lomita, CA, in the South Bay Area of Los Angeles, where he attended Lynwood Academy. At Lynwood Academy he met Sue Bassham, who became his wife soon after high school.
In November of 1961 Paul and Sue welcomed their son, Paul Christian Bengs, Jr. into the world. And in April of 1963, their daughter Brenda Lee Bengs was born.

During these early years of fatherhood, Paul worked manual labor to provide for his family, doing jobs requiring mechanical skills. At nights, during the late 1960’s, he attended college courses in Electrical Engineering, and eventually became an electrical engineer.

Paul spent the remainder of his career as an executive in various companies specializing in control systems for manufacturing, and oil and gas processing. He traveled the world for his work, and had the ability to befriend and work with people from many different cultures.

In 1982 Paul married Patricia Hendricks, and along with her two children, Chilant and Scott, began a new chapter of his life as a husband, step-father, and grandfather, residing in San Clemente. These years were especially happy for him, as he became closely bonded to his seven grandchildren, and played a central role in their lives as a loving mentor and a source of fun and joy for all of them.

In 2008, Paul married Cynthia Charles and spent his retirement years with her in Healdsburg, CA, in the heart of the wine country, where he enjoyed the vineyard views, daily companionship, and the love of his dog, “Dude”.

In 2018, experiencing a decline in mobility, Paul moved in with his son, Chris, where he spent the remainder of his days enjoying time with his son and daughter-in-law, sipping wine, playing with the dogs, listening to music, and talking on the phone to his numerous friends.

New Orleans was the place he loved the most, and he visited there frequently. Thus, his motto for life was, “Laissez les bon temps rouler” (let the good times roll). His mission in life was to enjoy it, to the maximum, with people that he loved.
